Lydian is developing sustainable aviation fuels from waste CO2, water, and renewable electricity, with breakthrough technology that produces jet fuel with 95% lower emissions than traditional sources. The company has achieved rapid milestones since 2021, including production of liquid fuel from a pilot system capable of ~10,000 gallons annually, and is backed by top climate investors including Congruent Ventures, Union Square Ventures, and Voyager Ventures. As Senior Materials Engineer, you will drive development and refinement of high-temperature ceramic and metal materials that form the core of Lydian's reactor and module platforms. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Materials Design & Manufacturing, this is a hands-on individual-contributor role combining deep materials fundamentals with execution urgency. Key responsibilities include: selecting and developing ceramic and metallic materials to improve electrical performance, strength, and consistency; developing joints and interfaces between materials and maturing joining processes; advancing protective coatings for operating conditions; connecting material properties to reactor-level performance; leading durability assessments and root-cause analyses; defining quality-control parameters and acceptance criteria; developing advanced characterization methods for material properties; translating R&D developments into scale-up-ready specifications; and engaging external technical partners to build reliable development and supply-chain systems. You will work alongside a small, high-caliber materials team and collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical design, catalysis, testing, and process engineering teams. The role is based onsite in Charlestown, MA, requiring five days per week in-person collaboration with up to 25% travel to partners and suppliers. Required qualifications: MS or PhD in Materials Science or equivalent; 3+ years industry experience with materials for industrial applications in manufacturing-focused environments; deep expertise in high-temperature materials; experience with ceramic materials manufacturing and joining processes; advanced characterization methods (SEM, Raman, micro-CT); demonstrated ability to engage external partners and translate theory to practical delivery; action-oriented personality with strong urgency and organizational skills. Preferred: experience measuring electrical and mechanical properties of ceramics and metals; experience scaling material manufacturing from R&D to commercial scale.
