Okta is seeking a Senior Manager for Software Engineering to lead the Core Engineering team, which builds shared infrastructure and services that power authentication and authorization for thousands of organizations worldwide. The Core team is responsible for developing and evolving foundational systems including search, cache, configuration management, async job frameworks, and email pipelines—all designed to deliver 99.99% uptime for Okta's core products.
In this role, you will manage a distributed team, setting expectations, removing blockers, and fostering a collaborative environment. You'll be responsible for hiring, recruitment, coaching, and career development discussions. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with architects, product owners, project managers, QA, security, and operations engineers to implement best practices around resilience and reliability.
Key responsibilities include: defining strategic direction and roadmap for the team; developing backend frameworks and tools for the entire engineering organization; contributing to incident RCA processes to improve reliability; providing technical guidance to engineers; evaluating and rolling out new services; and operating and scaling shared services as Okta grows. You'll also participate in cross-team projects with high business impact and help evolve systems to support future business needs.
You should bring prior management experience with distributed, diverse teams and strong stakeholder management skills. Technical expertise required includes software architecture across the full stack (monolithic and microservices), cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP), datastores (SQL, NoSQL, Key/Value), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and solid Java platform knowledge. SaaS experience is essential. Extra credit for knowledge of network security, authentication, authorization, and Golang experience.
This position requires the ability to access federal environments and work with protected federal data. You must be able to establish U.S. Person status (U.S. Citizen, National, Lawful Permanent Resident, Refugee, or Asylee) upon hire. The role requires 2 days per week in the San Francisco office.
