Salary: USD 180,000 - 200,000 / annual
Total Expert is the Customer Operating System for financial services, combining context and action systems to enable humans and AI assistants to engage customers effectively. The company has facilitated over seven trillion dollars in funded loan volume since 2016.
As Senior Manager, Software Engineering, you will lead engineering teams responsible for continuous delivery of customer value. You'll collaborate with Product and other stakeholders to establish alignment and set technical direction. This is a hands-on leadership role that balances team coaching with active participation in architectural conversations, technical design, and problem-solving alongside your engineers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with Product and Engineering leadership to set priorities, manage work in progress, and provide technical direction
- Actively participating in architectural discussions and technical design reviews, bringing hands-on expertise
- Coaching team members on problem analysis, estimation, software design, development, and testing within Agile methodology
- Driving the team's Agile development processes with focus on quality and lean principles
- Championing AI-assisted development practices, including tools like Claude Code, to improve developer productivity and quality
- Supporting department-level objectives and process improvements to increase velocity and software quality
- Managing and developing team members through goal setting, mentoring on development practices, technical skill building, and domain knowledge expansion
You'll work in a scale-up environment where you can drive innovation, solve complex customer problems, and enable great teams through listening, empathy, and inspiration.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience working within team-based event-driven distributed microservices environments
- 5+ years of experience managing a software team and providing technical direction
- Experience leading engineering teams through de-monolithing and transitioning to distributed system architectures
- Working knowledge of PHP and other object-oriented languages (C#, Java strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated technical depth: able to engage meaningfully in architectural conversations, contribute to design decisions, and assist in debugging or resolving complex issues
- Experience leading groups of software and quality engineering team members using Agile or Lean practices (Scrum, Kanban)
- Demonstrated experience identifying, implementing, and measuring team processes to improve quality, flow, and developer experience
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tooling (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) and track record of integrating AI into engineering workflows
- Experience working closely with or managing quality-focused team members
- Experience creating or driving best practices around automated unit testing
- Hands-on experience with AWS (RDS, EC2) and relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
