Salary: USD 225,750 - 282,450 / annual

Scale is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join its Public Sector Machine Learning team, focused on deploying cutting-edge AI models to mission-critical government systems. The role centers on leveraging generative AI, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and agentic AI to improve Scale's products and customer experience in production environments. Key responsibilities include taking state-of-the-art models developed internally and from the community and deploying them in production to solve problems for government customers. You will improve and maintain production models through retraining, hyperparameter tuning, and architectural updates while preserving core performance characteristics. The role involves collaborating with product and research teams to identify and prototype ML-driven product enhancements, including for upcoming product lines. You will work with massive datasets to develop both generic models and fine-tune models for specific products, and build scalable machine learning infrastructure to automate and optimize ML services. The position requires serving as a cross-functional representative and advocate for machine learning techniques across engineering and product organizations, with comfort learning new technologies quickly and managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The Public Sector ML team is focused on products like Donovan and Thunderforge, spanning multiple modalities with strong focus on large language models and computer vision. On the LLM side, you'll develop agentic systems solving complex operational and planning challenges, building agent frameworks integrating with custom retrieval pipelines and production APIs, and developing evaluation tools. On the computer vision front, you'll train advanced models to increase labeling throughput and automate perception tasks, including large-scale fine-tuning pipelines and generalizable vision foundation models. This role requires an active security clearance and involves approximately 10% light travel for customer interaction and team needs.
