Nearmap is a property intelligence platform using aerial imagery, AI analytics, and geospatial tools to help professionals plan, build, insure, and govern the built environment. As one of the top three AWS users in APAC, the company processes aerial imagery across Australia, the US, and Canada at scale.
You'll join the Platform team as a Senior MLOps Engineer, owning greenfield infrastructure projects end-to-end from architecture through production operations. This role bridges traditional DevOps and modern AI engineering, suited for backend/platform engineers transitioning into AI or those already making that shift.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building scalable ML infrastructure: large-scale batch inference on EKS, real-time model serving via Ray Serve, and GPU-accelerated distributed training on GCP and AWS
- Building the LLM platform underpinning Nearmap's next-generation generative AI products, including deployment, governance, experimentation, and cost optimization
- Owning developer experience for AI/CV engineering teams through CI/CD pipelines, Docker tooling, ArgoCD, Weights & Biases, and Arize AI
- Driving reliability and observability across production ML systems with real SLAs and SLOs
- Contributing production-quality Python to shared platform libraries and services
- Playing a tech lead role on primary projects with advisory exposure across others
- Engaging directly with ML tooling vendors including AWS, GCP, Weights & Biases, Confluent, and Arize AI
You'll support teams including Model R&D, Computer Vision, Insurance Data Science, Agentic AI, and AI Map Data.
Must-haves: Production experience with Kubernetes-based platforms (EKS/GKE) at scale, high-concurrency API development in production, operational mindset with SLA/SLO management, strong DevOps fundamentals (CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code), and production-level Python.
Highly valued: Ray Serve experience, LLM/generative AI platform production work, ML observability tools (Arize AI, Evidently, Prometheus/Grafana), Terraform, terabyte/petabyte-scale experience, and GPU/CPU cost optimization expertise.
The role is based in Barangaroo, Sydney, or elsewhere on Australia's east coast (QLD, ACT, VIC, SA, TAS). Hybrid flexibility available. Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, or those with full working rights in Australia.
