Lila Sciences is building Scientific Superintelligence to solve humanity's greatest challenges by combining advanced AI models with proprietary AI Science Factory instruments. This Senior Machine Learning Engineer role focuses on the Physical Sciences team, where you'll design and operate end-to-end, scalable machine learning workflows that advance research in materials, chemistry, and physical sciences.
You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining production ML pipelines covering data ingestion, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring. A key part of your work involves productionizing models and services with robust testing, observability, and documentation. You'll collaborate with cross-functional software teams to build CI/CD workflows and automated evaluations that ensure safe, frequent releases.
Your responsibilities include translating research insights from domain scientists and platform engineers into performant, scalable systems. You'll contribute to technical design reviews, establish coding standards, and mentor best practices across the team.
Required qualifications include a BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field (or equivalent industry experience). You need strong Python software engineering fundamentals with experience in testing, packaging, and typing. Proficiency with machine learning frameworks like PyTorch or Huggingface is essential, as is hands-on experience deploying ML services to production in cloud-based infrastructure (FastAPI/GRPC, containers, orchestration). You should have demonstrated experience with model deployment in production systems including LLMs, multimodal models, databases, and RAG implementations, with strong debugging and profiling skills.
Bonus qualifications include exposure to scientific or engineering domains (materials, chemistry, physics), GPU optimization experience (CUDA, Triton, compilation, distributed training), contributions to open-source ML or scientific software, and experience with workflow orchestration, data provenance, or large-scale compute environments.
Lila Sciences offers competitive base compensation with bonus potential and generous early-stage equity. U.S. employees receive comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage; employer-paid life and disability insurance; flexible time off with generous holidays; paid parental leave; educational assistance; commuter benefits; and subsidized lunch.
