Adyen is a global financial technology platform providing payments, data, and financial products for enterprises like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. You will join a multidisciplinary Infrastructure Engineering team responsible for the core systems that underpin Adyen's operations: configuration management, mail infrastructure, and identity and access management (IAM). These foundational components are critical to the security and reliability of every engineer, system, and service at Adyen.
As a Senior Linux System Engineer, you will focus primarily on the identity and access management layer of Adyen's infrastructure. Your mission is to ensure that every person, system, and AI agent receives exactly the access they need, only when they need it, with full auditability and explainability of every access decision.
Key responsibilities include:
- **Identity & Access Management**: Maintain and improve IAM infrastructure for humans, systems, and AI agents across on-premise and cloud environments, using tools such as Teleport and SPIFFE/SPIRE.
- **Zero Trust & Access Policies**: Implement zero trust, just-in-time, and just-enough access principles across the infrastructure. Define, refine, and enforce access policies and models.
- **Security & Compliance**: Collaborate with Security and Compliance teams on access reviews, audits, and hardening initiatives. Turn findings into concrete infrastructure improvements.
- **Core Infrastructure Support**: Maintain and support other critical infrastructure components including LDAP, Puppet, Ansible, and mail infrastructure, ensuring stability, security, and low operational overhead.
- **Support & Reliability**: Serve as an escalation point for access and infrastructure issues. Help teams resolve and learn from incidents. Participate in a blameless on-call rotation.
- **Knowledge Sharing**: Share IAM and security expertise within your multidisciplinary team and across the wider engineering organization.
You are security-minded, thinking about potential abuse vectors before systems ship. You prefer simple, reliable solutions over clever ones and take ownership of problems until resolved. You thrive in teams with mixed expertise, share knowledge generously, and stay current as identity, security, and AI evolve.
This role is based in Adyen's Amsterdam office. The company is office-first and values in-person collaboration; remote-only arrangements are not available.
**Requirements:**
- 8+ years of hands-on Linux systems engineering in large-scale, high-availability production environments
- Strong background in identity and access management with solid grasp of security principles (zero trust, least privilege, just-in-time and just-enough access) and experience translating them into enforceable access policies
- Hands-on production experience with Kubernetes, identity and access tooling (Teleport, SPIFFE/SPIRE, HashiCorp Vault, or equivalents), and strong understanding of PKI, short-lived certificates, and mTLS
- Deep knowledge of LDAP and the Linux authentication stack (SSSD, PAM, SSH) and identity protocols (OIDC, OAuth 2.0, SAML)
- Experience with configuration management at scale (Puppet, Ansible) and scripting/programming in Bash, Python, or Go
- Clear communication skills and ability to explain access and security decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
**Highly Desired:**
- IAM experience in regulated environments such as financial services (PCI DSS, DORA)
- Experience with Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) systems
- Familiarity with policy-as-code tools (OPA, Cedar, RBAC)
