You will serve as Senior Legal Engineer, reporting to the General Manager of Legal Engineering. This multifaceted role blends prompt engineering, legal workflow design, product advisory, and hands-on building. You'll collaborate with product and service delivery teams to develop AI-powered legal workflows, create comprehensive enablement materials (webinars, training, self-directed courses), monitor legal AI and contract automation trends, and drive operational efficiency by piloting AI-first workflows and measuring quality outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partnering with Product and service delivery to develop and refine contract review, drafting, and negotiation workflows aligned with client needs and industry standards
- Creating training materials to educate Ontra employees and legal network members on contract workflows and practical AI use
- Monitoring legal AI, contract automation, and legal service delivery markets to inform product improvements
- Piloting AI-first legal workflows, evaluating outputs against legal playbooks, and measuring quality and turnaround time
- Acting as a technical subject matter expert, providing consulting support on AI-native services and Contract Automation projects
- Experimenting with prompts and prototypes, iterating quickly on feedback
Ontra is remote-first with office hubs in NYC, Santa Barbara, and London. This role requires a hybrid schedule: 3 days per week (typically Tuesday–Thursday) in the NYC office, building and iterating on workflows alongside attorneys and engineers.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of directly relevant legal experience with focus on transactional law (drafting, reviewing, or negotiating NDAs, vendor contracts, commercial contracts; M&A due diligence experience is a plus)
- Experience in private practice and/or in-house at an investment bank or asset manager is a plus
- JD, LLM, or LLB (US qualifications preferred but not mandatory)
- Exceptional verbal and written communication; prior customer-facing role experience is advantageous
- Demonstrated organizational excellence, high ownership, proactive problem-solving, teamwork, and results orientation
- Hands-on use of AI tools (Claude, GPT, Harvey, Legora, or similar) in legal or professional work is required; must be comfortable refining prompts, checking outputs for accuracy, and recognizing when human legal judgment is needed
- Experience building a reusable AI skill or custom workflow, or experimenting with Codex or Claude Code to create a small app or workflow is preferred (exploratory or personal projects welcome; coding experience not required)
- Must be willing to work 3 days per week in NYC office
