Kit is a creator-focused email marketing and commerce platform helping coaches, YouTubers, authors, podcasters, and other creatives grow audiences, automate marketing, and sell digital products. The company is 100% remote, independent, and on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion using their platform.
Kit is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to serve as the in-house legal subject matter expert, partnering closely with the executive team (reporting to the Chief Operating Officer) to lead product legal strategy and execution. The role focuses on privacy, data, AI, compliance, commercial contracts, customer security requirements, and scalable legal support across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing deep understanding of Kit's business model, products (Kit, SparkLoop, Subscriber Signals), and creator ecosystem
- Building scalable systems for handling recurring privacy and compliance questions, particularly around Subscriber Signals
- Owning core legal work in-house, reducing reliance on outside counsel while knowing when specialized expertise is needed
- Partnering with product, sales, finance, security, and people operations teams on cross-functional legal challenges
- Managing GDPR and data compliance vetting and establishing processes for customer security questionnaires
- Creating playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance for common legal questions
- Supporting the product lifecycle with attention to privacy and compliance considerations
- Helping Kit operate at higher legal maturity across privacy, compliance, product counsel, and commercial contracts
The role requires someone who views legal as a strategic enabler rather than a blocker, can simplify complexity for non-legal stakeholders, and thrives in a fast-moving environment. You'll be the sole in-house legal expert with access to outside counsel as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product law
- Strong knowledge of U.S. and European data privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), including controller vs. processor distinctions
- Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks and self-service guidance
- Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering with security, sales, product, and engineering teams
- Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II certification requirements
- Understanding of intellectual property law (brand, content, software)
- Understanding of commercial contracts
- Excellent communication and ability to serve as trusted advisor
- Prior experience as in-house counsel at a tech company OR serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier startup-focused law firm (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley)
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school
- Active membership in good standing with a State Bar Association
- Located in the United States
- Strategic mindset, business orientation, collaborative approach, and comfort with speed and ownership
