Remote is a global HR-tech platform that enables businesses to recruit, pay, and manage international teams compliantly. This is a Senior Legal Counsel role focused on commercial legal matters across the APAC region.
You will serve as the primary legal partner to Remote's APAC sales teams, owning Terms of Service negotiations, contract redlining, and commercial agreement reviews. This is an individual contributor role with no managerial responsibilities, reporting to the Director of Legal - Commercial. You will lead live negotiations with customers and their counsel on strategic and enterprise deals, handle escalated matters involving customer paper and high-value contracts, and serve as the Legal Primary DRI (Directly Responsible Individual) for APAC under Remote's Legal Matter Framework.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing timely legal support on ToS negotiations, contract redlining, and commercial agreement reviews for APAC sales teams
- Leading live negotiations with customers and counsel on enterprise deals
- Handling escalations in-region and in-time-zone
- Supporting other regions as bandwidth permits
- Partnering with Sales, Finance, and cross-functional teams on commercial agreements
- Developing templates, playbooks, and processes for commercial transactions
- Providing legal training to internal stakeholders, particularly APAC sales teams
- Coordinating with local counsel when jurisdiction-specific advice is required
- Collaborating with Data Protection and AI Governance teams on privacy and AI terms
Remote emphasizes that this role involves high-judgment work: routine escalations and triage are increasingly automated, so the work reaching you requires independent judgment, live negotiation skills, and the ability to work from first principles on novel risk allocation.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven expertise supporting commercial transactions, particularly enterprise-level SaaS agreements, Terms of Service negotiations, and sales contract reviews; experience supporting sales teams across APAC highly valued
- Qualified to practice in an APAC jurisdiction; English is the working language for negotiations and internal collaboration; additional APAC languages are a strong advantage but not required
- Demonstrated comfort operating across multiple APAC jurisdictions and legal traditions, with judgment to know when local-law questions need local counsel
- Strong commercial drafting skills; ability to craft clear, precise, enforceable agreements that protect Remote's interests while facilitating business objectives
- Strong negotiation skills and ability to develop creative, practical solutions for complex commercial challenges; comfortable leading live negotiations with counterparties and their counsel
- Experience with enterprise deals on customer paper (customer MSAs, bespoke terms, formal RFx processes); confidence to work from first principles without templates
- Sharp commercial instincts and strategic thinking focused on driving business success while navigating legal complexities; comfortable letting go of immaterial points to keep negotiations moving
- Prior HR-tech industry experience or familiarity with bespoke HR services agreements beneficial but not required
- Proven ability to excel in fast-paced environments, maintaining responsiveness and adaptability under pressure
- Strong capacity to work independently while collaborating effectively with sales and cross-functional teams; confident in expertise, open to learning, prioritizing team success
- Outstanding ability to build trusted relationships with sales stakeholders while maintaining independent legal judgment; know when to be flexible and when to push back firmly
- Comfort working alongside automated triage and legal tooling, with interest in helping improve it; see automation as leverage rather than threat
- Humor and humility that make you a joy to work with
