Valar Atomics is a Series A nuclear energy company building scalable, factory-made advanced nuclear systems for clean high-temperature power generation. The company's first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power industrial, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing applications.
You will join the Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical (IC&E) Engineering team within the Fuel Manufacturing group as a Senior Hardware Engineer. This role owns the physical measurement and control layer for nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities, working alongside IC&E Software, process, electrical, mechanical, and nuclear safety engineers in a hands-on, safety-first environment.
Key responsibilities include:
• Specify, select, and size field instrumentation (flow, pressure, temperature, level, analytical devices) and produce instrument data sheets and requisitions
• Design and size final control elements including control valves, actuators, positioners, and perform valve sizing, noise, and cavitation checks
• Design control panels and remote I/O architecture including enclosure layout, I/O module allocation, power distribution, UPS sizing, and intrinsic safety barriers
• Perform hazardous area classification per NEC Article 500/505 or IEC 60079; prepare intrinsic safety calculations
• Develop instrumentation documentation including instrument indexes, loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, I/O lists, and P&ID mark-ups
• Support safety instrumented system (SIS) hardware scope including SIL determination, sensor/final element selection, redundancy architecture, and IEC 61511/61508 verification
• Tune PID and advanced control loops; commission field instrumentation and diagnose measurement quality issues
• Establish and execute instrument calibration programs with NIST traceability
• Specify and oversee field wiring and OT network infrastructure installation
• Prepare and execute hardware FAT, SAT, and commissioning plans with point-to-point checks and interlock testing
• Diagnose and resolve field faults including I/O failures, transmitter drift, and signal problems
• Support instrument reliability engineering including criticality analysis, spares planning, and obsolescence management
• Coordinate with process, mechanical, piping, and software engineering teams on installation details and control logic consistency
This is a hands-on role where measurement quality and installation integrity directly support production reliability and nuclear safety. The team values technical depth, disciplined documentation, and a safety-first culture.
