Valar Atomics is a Series A nuclear energy company building advanced, scalable nuclear power systems for industrial heat, hydrogen production, and next-generation manufacturing. The company is constructing a pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah to demonstrate factory-made, rapidly deployable nuclear technology.
You will join the Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) and Controls Engineering team within the Fuel Manufacturing group. This senior role owns the full controls stack—from PLC and DCS programming at the field level to SCADA, HMI, historian systems, and enterprise integration at the supervisory level. You will work alongside process, electrical, and nuclear safety engineers in a hands-on environment where control system quality directly supports production reliability and nuclear safety compliance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and commission PLC/DCS programs using platforms such as Rockwell ControlLogix, Siemens S7/TIA Portal, or Emerson; program in ladder logic, function block, structured text, and sequential function chart per IEC 61131-3
- Develop and configure SCADA applications (Ignition, FactoryTalk, Wonderware, WinCC) including tag databases, drivers, scripting, and alarm configuration
- Design HMI displays at local panel and supervisory SCADA levels per ISA-101 and High-Performance HMI principles
- Develop batch control sequences per ISA-88 including phase logic, unit procedures, and recipe management
- Configure alarm systems to ISA-18.2 standards with setpoints, priorities, and suppression logic
- Configure and commission safety instrumented functions (SIFs) on SIS platforms per IEC 61511
- Manage plant historian systems (OSIsoft PI, Ignition Historian, FactoryTalk Historian); build dashboards and support ISA-95 enterprise-control integration
- Tune PID and advanced regulatory control loops; commission instrumentation (flow, pressure, temperature, level)
- Own instrument engineering scope including sizing, specification, and hazardous area classification; review junior engineer and contractor work
- Implement industrial communication protocols (OPC-UA, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus)
- Support OT network cybersecurity hardening per IEC 62443 or NIST SP 800-82
- Prepare and execute FAT, SAT, and commissioning plans; maintain engineering documentation
- Diagnose and resolve control system faults; perform root cause analysis
- Provide technical direction to contractors and consultants; review deliverables for compliance
The role requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, or Systems Engineering or related discipline, with demonstrated expertise in industrial control systems, PLC/DCS programming, SCADA development, and nuclear or highly regulated manufacturing environments.
