Muon Space is seeking a Senior Instrument Scientist to lead calibration design for electro-optical/infrared instruments on LEO satellite constellations. You will own the end-to-end radiometric and geometric calibration methodology, defining how raw instrument signal becomes science-grade, orbit-ready data. This is a technical leadership role within the Instrument Science team, translating physics and calibration theory into operational capability from concept through end-of-life.
Key responsibilities include:
- Defining radiometric calibration methodology and standards to convert raw instrument signal into calibrated, science-grade measurements
- Establishing geometric calibration methodology and procedures for pointing and geometric accuracy determination and correction
- Defining calibration data processing pipelines and outputs in partnership with the Infrared Data Product team
- Supporting ground-calibration test planning by translating methodology into executable test procedures with the Calibration Testing scientist
- Participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation (approximately one week every six weeks) to support on-orbit anomaly resolution
You will work cross-functionally with Instrument Systems, Assembly, Integration & Test, and Design teams, translating technical calibration concepts into clear requirements and procedures.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's, Master's, or doctoral degree in engineering, physics, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years developing radiometric or geometric calibration methodology for imaging systems, remote sensing instruments, or comparable electro-optical hardware
- Familiarity with calibration equipment (integrating spheres, blackbodies, collimators, autocollimators)
- Experience converting radiometric or geometric calibration methodology into data processing algorithms and calibration products
- Strong communication skills; ability to translate calibration methodology into requirements and test procedures across multiple teams
Nice-to-have: ground calibration test infrastructure experience, visible/infrared sensor and scanner characterization, calibration data validation with downstream teams, calibration uncertainty analysis and error budgeting, willingness to travel for calibration/validation campaigns.
