Salary: USD 184,000 - 223,000 / annual
Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks a Senior Instrument Calibration Scientist to establish and lead calibration standards and infrastructure for infrared remote sensing instruments. Based in Mountain View with hybrid work (3 days/week on-site), this role owns radiometric and geometric calibration across multiple instrument programs, developing best practices and scalable test hardware infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include leading the design and development of calibration test hardware, planning and executing pre-launch calibration campaigns to establish baseline sensor performance models, supporting performance metrics definition for ground-to-orbit tracking, and collaborating with instrument engineers, data scientists, mission operations, and program managers. The role includes approximately one week per month on-call rotation for on-orbit anomaly resolution.
Required qualifications: Ph.D. with 3+ years developing imaging/infrared remote sensing systems in multi-disciplinary environments (or M.S. with 6+ years, or B.S. with 8+ years). Must have software proficiency in Python, Julia, C++, or similar languages; hands-on experience with precision optical equipment for characterization and calibration; root cause analysis and data analysis skills; and excellent communication abilities. Nice-to-have skills include business development contributions, mission-to-technical requirements translation, ConOps development, cleanroom experience, and environmental/integrated testing background.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, versatile, and comfortable working across technical depths in fast-paced, small-team environments. This is a key member of the instrument team responsible for delivering science-grade calibration artifacts to the data team.
