Portal Space Systems is building spacecraft for orbital operations and in-space mobility. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer owns the architecture and engineering of Portal's infrastructure, leveraging Azure cloud services and maintaining a streamlined on-premises VMware footprint. Key responsibilities include designing cloud-native solutions on Azure using managed services, PaaS, and serverless patterns rather than lift-and-shift VM approaches. The role continuously evaluates infrastructure for modernization opportunities and designs systems that scale cost-effectively as the company grows. You'll maintain Portal's on-premises network infrastructure (Fortinet stack) and serve as the primary in-house owner of Microsoft Entra ID and Azure Government tenant, working alongside MSP support. Backup, disaster recovery, and reliability are critical: you'll own the Veeam backup strategy across on-premises and cloud workloads, engineer cloud-based DR for the VMware environment, and participate in on-call rotation for critical infrastructure incidents. You'll treat compute as disposable, building with infrastructure-as-code so environments can be rebuilt on demand. As the escalation point for the MSP-staffed service desk, you'll handle infrastructure issues beyond tier-1 scope and treat repeat escalations as design problems to be fixed at the root. You'll deliver responsive support to Portal's engineering teams while balancing speed with security and compliance standards. Security and compliance are built into every solution. You'll support Portal's CMMC Level 2, DFARS, and ITAR obligations through GRC engineering practices, automating compliance evidence collection and control monitoring. The role reports directly to the Director of IT and requires strong hands-on Azure expertise, experience with managed services and cloud-native patterns, and a philosophy of elegant, intuitive infrastructure design.
