Lila Sciences is seeking a Senior II/Staff Mechatronics Engineer to join the Advanced Engineering Team and design, develop, and optimize early-stage electromechanical systems, robotics subassemblies, and lab instrumentation. This role bridges hardware, software, electrical, and controls engineering to bring scientific concepts to reality.
Key responsibilities include developing novel mechatronic solutions for scientific and robotic applications with mechanical, electrical, and control software components. You will collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software developers, product managers, and end-users to provide technical support and resolve integration challenges. The role emphasizes rapid prototyping using 3D printing, machining, and commercial off-the-shelf components, along with rigorous testing, debugging, and troubleshooting of systems and subassemblies.
You will create comprehensive technical documentation including design drawings, integration methods, and test plans, and design solutions to integrate custom or existing components with automation frameworks and robotics control systems. The position requires a hands-on, prototype-heavy environment with strong troubleshooting and debugging capabilities.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or related engineering discipline with 6-10 years of relevant experience. You must have strong proficiency with C/C++ and Python, microcontroller experience (STM-32, Arduino, Raspberry Pi), and CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, Siemens NX). Additional requirements include expertise in rapid prototyping, sensor and motor integration, analog signal types (4-20mA, 0-10V), discrete I/O, version control systems (GitHub, SolidWorks PDM), and embedded communication protocols (UART/Serial, SPI, I2C, CAN).
Bonus qualifications include custom PCB design and fabrication, PLC-based systems experience, industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, RS-232, OPC/UA, MQTT), vacuum systems expertise, optical systems familiarity, and semiconductor manufacturing background. Lila Sciences offers competitive base compensation with bonus potential and early-stage equity, comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, flexible time off, paid parental leave, educational assistance, and commuter benefits.
