As a Senior II Backend Engineer, you will drive technical direction across multiple engineering squads and lead high-impact initiatives that power Preply's platform growth. This is a staff-level individual contributor role with significant influence over architecture and engineering standards across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own and shape technical direction across multiple squads, influencing how the platform scales
- Lead complex, ambiguous initiatives from conception through delivery, aligning engineers, product managers, and stakeholders
- Design and evolve scalable backend systems using Python/Django, data pipelines, and third-party integrations
- Partner with product and engineering leadership to shape roadmaps and guide investment decisions
- Raise engineering standards through mentoring, architectural reviews, and best practices
- Drive reliability, observability, performance, and operational excellence across services
- Foster a quality-first culture through automation and continuous improvement
- Participate in on-call rotation (1 week per 5-week cycle)
You should have proven experience with large-scale web application architecture, a track record of leading greenfield projects end-to-end, and demonstrated ability to shape architectural decisions impacting multiple teams. Strong communication skills (English B2+) and the ability to influence senior peers are essential. While Python is the primary language, the company welcomes engineers from Java, Node.js, Ruby, Scala, .NET, Go, and other backgrounds—what matters is adaptability and eagerness to learn.
