CesiumAstro is seeking a Senior Ground Software Engineer to design, develop, and deploy ground software systems for a new satellite constellation. You will work on command and control, telemetry, telemetry database, and ground station software for Element, the largest and most powerful rideshare satellite in LEO. The company is launching eight satellites over the next four years, with the first launch this year.
In this role, you will execute the design and deployment of ground software systems, implement real-time data acquisition and visualization for satellite telemetry, integrate and test ground software with satellite hardware and network infrastructure, and develop automated systems for satellite operation and monitoring. You will conduct rigorous testing and validation including simulations and real-world scenarios, troubleshoot software issues during operations, and collaborate closely with hardware engineers, satellite operators, and other software teams. You will also provide technical leadership and mentorship to the software development team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. This is a hands-on role with direct impact on the company's success in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 5 years of software engineering experience with focus on satellite ground systems
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- Demonstrated experience leading a software team through product development
- Prior experience as a satellite operator (required)
- Proficiency in Python, Java, and C++
- Experience in satellite test and data collection applications
- Strong knowledge of satellite communication protocols (CCSDS, CSP)
- Familiarity with ground station hardware and RF communication principles
- Familiarity with RF coding schemes such as DVB-S2
- Experience with network architectures and protocols (TCP/IP, UDP)
- Experience with load balancing network applications and cloud-based systems
- Knowledge of Linux/Unix operating systems and system administration
- Experience with Agile and DevOps software development methodologies
- Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices for satellite and ground systems
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose complex issues in real-time
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
PREFERRED: Experience with Space Development Agency NEBULA standard; Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
