Pebl is a global employment platform that uses AI to help companies hire, pay, and manage employees across 185+ countries. The company is building Alfie, a conversational AI assistant, and seeking a Senior Frontend Software Engineer to lead the design and development of user-facing AI experiences. In this role, you'll own the frontend/UX side of conversational AI interfaces while maintaining full-stack capability. You'll design and build features that handle streaming responses, error recovery, fallback states, user trust, and human-in-the-loop interactions. Your work will shape how users interact with agentic systems—moving beyond standard chatbot patterns to define what AI-native UX should look like. Key responsibilities include: designing full-stack features with frontend depth; applying hands-on LLM and agentic system knowledge (prompt design, tool calling, multi-step reasoning) to shape both assistant behavior and UI presentation; bringing strong product taste to push for exceptional UX rather than shipping adequate solutions; prototyping and proposing new interaction patterns as model capabilities evolve; building and maintaining TypeScript/React frontends and supporting backend components; mentoring junior engineers; and troubleshooting production issues end-to-end, including AI-specific failure modes. You'll need 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated strength and clear preference for frontend/UX work. You should have 1+ years of hands-on experience building LLM-powered or agentic products (not just API integration, but designing agent reasoning and tool use). Experience building interfaces for AI-powered products—conversational UIs, copilots, assistants—is essential, including exposure to generative/dynamic UI techniques. You'll need solid understanding of LLM design patterns, prompt engineering, and observability for agentic systems; strong command of React/TypeScript paired with understanding of frontend-backend integration and real-time/streaming data; a track record of building products with real craft and distinctive UX; comfort working across the full stack; and a lean, iteration-focused mindset. The role requires in-office collaboration Monday-Wednesday in Palo Alto. This is not a backend AI infrastructure, RAG platform, internal automation, or AI-assisted developer tooling role—the core need is user-facing AI experience design and implementation.
