MUBI is a global streaming service, production company, and film distributor dedicated to elevating great cinema. The company creates, curates, acquires, and champions visionary films, bringing them to audiences worldwide with offices spanning London, New York, Istanbul, Paris, Berlin, and Mexico. You will join the Frontend team as a Senior Engineer, contributing to the architecture and implementation of MUBI's web platform—a streaming player, curated catalogue, and editorial publication serving millions of cinema enthusiasts globally. This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role reporting to the Head of Frontend. Key responsibilities include: - Design and implement features across the platform (discovery, catalogue, player, editorial pages) using React, TypeScript, and Next.js, owning them end-to-end from technical scoping through implementation, automated testing (unit, integration, E2E), deployment, and observability. - Work directly on media player integrations, adaptive streaming experiences, dynamic video previews, and high-framerate media components. - Analyze and continuously optimize client-side bundle size, Core Web Vitals, server-side rendering performance, and edge caching strategies. - Set the standard for code quality, testing, and review on the team, helping other engineers reach that bar. - Experiment with AI coding agents, share effective prompts and skills, and push for measurable gains over novelty. You will partner closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, video CDN engineers, and backend teams to craft high-performance, seamless digital experiences. The role operates on a hybrid-remote model requiring 3 in-office days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday core days) if near one of MUBI's sites, with flexibility to use offices on remaining days. Requirements: - 8+ years of frontend experience with a proven track record building and operating complex, consumer-facing web applications at scale using React, Next.js/SSR, and TypeScript. - Expert knowledge of the DOM, browser rendering optimization, web performance profiling tools, state management strategies, and HTTP/media protocol fundamentals. - Understanding of how media is delivered to and played in modern web browsers, including familiarity with HLS, DASH, Widevine, FairPlay, and CORS. - Commitment to maintainable code, test-driven development (Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress/Playwright), and strong CI/CD practices. - Clear and articulate technical communication in an agile, cross-functional engineering organization. - Independent mindset and genuine curiosity about how the product is used. - Ability to champion AI adoption across the team, experimenting with coding agents and pushing for measurable gains. Nice to have: - Experience in a fast-paced, high-growth environment (startup or scale-up). - Experience leading or contributing to cross-functional projects with Product, Marketing, Finance, or Engineering teams. - Experience with design systems and close collaboration with designers. - Genuine interest in film and MUBI's mission.
