Extreme Networks is seeking a Staff Forward Deployed Engineer to serve as a technical leader for complex customer engagements. You will work directly with strategic customers to design, build, validate, and deploy production solutions using Extreme's networking, AI, and cloud platforms.
In this role, you will own technical outcomes from discovery and architecture through implementation, deployment, and production readiness. You'll work side-by-side with customer engineering teams to understand their environments, systems, workflows, and constraints, then translate complex or ambiguous problems into scalable, secure, and reliable production solutions. These solutions may include agents, applications, integrations, data connectors, APIs, tools, workflows, and supporting infrastructure.
You will remain deeply hands-on while providing technical leadership to other engineers on engagements. You'll write production-quality software, integrate Extreme's products with customer systems and data sources, build automated tests and deployment automation, implement observability and monitoring, and diagnose complex issues across software, data, integrations, networking, and infrastructure. You'll also identify reusable patterns and platform gaps that emerge from customer work and collaborate with Product teams to incorporate recurring customer needs into Extreme's platforms.
Key responsibilities include: understanding customer workflows and technical constraints; designing and delivering production solutions; owning significant technical components from design through deployment; writing production software including applications, agents, APIs, and integrations; integrating with customer systems and infrastructure; building CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code; implementing logging and monitoring; resolving complex cross-functional issues; participating in architecture and code reviews; supporting production deployment and stabilization; creating technical documentation and runbooks; identifying reusable components and engineering patterns; defining feature requirements with Product teams; and contributing to engineering standards and knowledge sharing across the FDE organization.
The role reports to the Director of Software Systems Engineering and is based in Seattle, WA with hybrid flexibility. Travel to customer sites is required as needed for engagements.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience)
- 5+ years of experience across the full software development lifecycle (design, implementation, testing, deployment, production operations)
- Strong hands-on software development proficiency in one or more general-purpose languages (Python, Java, Go, TypeScript, C#, C++)
- Experience building and operating distributed, cloud-based, or enterprise software systems
- Experience with APIs, integrations, data, containers, and modern software deployment practices
- Demonstrated ability to debug complex software and systems issues and deliver production-quality solutions
- Ability to work through ambiguous technical problems and drive engineering work to completion
- Experience collaborating directly with customers, partners, or external technical teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to travel to customer sites as required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or related discipline
- Experience building LLM-based or agentic systems (tool use, retrieval, orchestration, context management, evaluation, production deployment)
- Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and modern agent frameworks
- Experience with networking, network management, telemetry, observability, or distributed systems
- Experience with cloud-native technologies (Kubernetes, containers, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD)
- Experience integrating enterprise APIs, data platforms, identity systems, and operational applications
- Experience with distributed data platforms, streaming systems, or real-time processing
- Prior experience in Forward Deployed Engineering or similar technical customer-facing software engineering role
