Halter is a climate-tech company transforming sustainable grazing practices through IoT-enabled livestock management. The company has developed smart collars that guide cattle herds without traditional fencing, quad bikes, or dogs—enabling farmers to optimize productivity while improving animal welfare and land sustainability. As Senior Firmware Engineer, you'll own the embedded systems that power Halter's connected collar platform. Your responsibilities include:
• Design and implement robust embedded C/C++ firmware for resource-constrained IoT collars running FreeRTOS, with strict power, memory, and reliability constraints.
• Architect and optimize wireless communication systems: LoRa mesh networking, cellular connectivity, BLE, and protocol layers (CoAP, OSCORE, protobuf) that enable secure, efficient device-to-device and device-to-cloud communication.
• Develop signal processing algorithms and real-time synchronization logic for distributed sensor networks, including filtering, estimation, and timing coordination across hundreds of devices.
• Own firmware end-to-end: design, implementation, testing, mass deployment, and production support for a live fleet operating in harsh outdoor environments.
• Debug complex field-only issues using telemetry, logs, and deep system understanding; collaborate closely with hardware engineers on analog/digital interfaces, sensors, radios, and power systems.
• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing; contribute to platform-wide quality, tooling, and reliability improvements.
You bring solid experience shipping firmware for resource-constrained embedded devices, strong C/C++ fundamentals, and comfort with low-level hardware (interrupts, memory management, real-time behavior, concurrency). A genuine background in mathematics, physics, or equivalent depth is essential—you reason about timing, signal behavior, probability, and control systems rather than treating them as black boxes. Experience with wireless/networked systems (LoRa, BLE, cellular, mesh) and a strong sense of ownership are critical.
Bonus qualifications include FreeRTOS internals knowledge, GPS/GNSS or distributed timing systems experience, signal processing or control theory background, IoT communication technologies (LTE-M, NB-IoT), and genuine curiosity about farming and outdoor hardware durability.
