Octopus Energy France, the 5th largest energy supplier in France and a leader in renewable energy, is seeking a Senior Financial Accountant to join its rapidly growing Finance function. The company is undergoing significant transformation, including a recent migration from Odoo to NetSuite, supplier chain automation, and alignment with UK group standards.
You will own a critical scope covering gross margin accounting and energy taxation. This is not an execution-only role—you will identify problems, understand root causes, and implement sustainable solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Gross Margin & Energy Accounting: Lead monthly accounting of gross margin flows (energy purchases, distribution, invoiced and uninvoiced sales) and produce critical analysis of variations, gaps, and levers. Strengthen month-end cut-off and accruals (invoices to be issued, delivered but uninvoiced energy, provisions) in coordination with operations and billing teams. Document and justify accounts within your scope, resolving anomalies to completion.
Energy Taxation & VAT: Prepare, control, and file VAT declarations (CA3), electricity and natural gas excise taxes, and CTA. Establish intra-EU goods exchange declarations (EMEBI). Serve as the reference contact for tax questions within your scope—analyze new cases (commercial offers, loyalty programs, new products), formalize positions, and challenge them with external advisors. Contribute to compliance with electronic invoicing and e-reporting reforms.
Supervision & Control: Oversee and control supplier accounting operations; contribute to automation chain improvements (NetSuite, Rossum). Be the primary contact for statutory auditors and external auditors on your scope—prepare supporting documentation, respond to requests, track recommendations.
Structuring & Continuous Improvement: Identify friction points in closings and processes; propose and implement solutions. Shorten and strengthen monthly closings post-NetSuite migration. Write and maintain process and control documentation. Drive AI and automation deployment within Finance.
Expected Progression:
Months 0–3: Master NetSuite, Rossum, and system flows. Understand energy market mechanics and gross margin construction. Complete first closings and declarations in tandem; deliver initial diagnostic of scope fragilities.
Months 4–6: Achieve full autonomy on closings, margin analysis, and all tax filings. Become the reference contact for energy taxation internally and with auditors/advisors. Deliver at least one concrete, measurable improvement (process, control, automation).
Beyond 6 months: Propose initiatives on Finance roadmap; mentor team on your scope.
Requirements:
- Degree: DSCG, DCG, Master CCA, or equivalent
- Experience: 4–7 years in accounting and taxation, ideally with audit/advisory firm background followed by corporate experience
- Tax expertise: Solid VAT mastery; energy excise tax knowledge preferred. Experience in energy, utilities, or high-volume billing sectors is a strong plus
- Demanding monthly closings and auditor interactions
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, Power Query); comfort analyzing large data volumes. Appetite for automation and AI tools appreciated
- ERP knowledge (NetSuite preferred); experience with migration or process redesign projects desired
- Languages: Professional French and English (B2–C1); regular communication with UK group teams
Differentiators:
- True problem-solver: you trace unexplained variances to root cause and prevent recurrence
- Comfortable in evolving environments with incomplete documentation; enjoy structuring
- Autonomous, rigorous, able to prioritize in fast-moving contexts
- Able to explain technical topics to non-financial stakeholders (operations, billing, IT)
