Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Field Mechanical Engineer to oversee assembly operations for the SPARC Tokamak, a commercially viable fusion power plant under construction. This is a hands-on, on-site role based in the CFS-2 facility at Devens, MA, working second shift (3:00 PM – 1:00 AM, five nights per week). You will serve as the central owner and expert for complex work-stations within the SPARC assembly process. Your core responsibilities include: • Station ownership: Define and execute the assembly sequence for your assigned work-station, from large magnet positioning to precision plasma-facing component alignment. • Problem-solving and engineering oversight: Identify and resolve assembly issues (fit, method, component handling) in real-time, collaborating with Tokamak System design teams to modify parts or processes while maintaining functional requirements. • Tool and fixture development: Proactively procure or design and build specialized tools, fixtures, and manipulation equipment needed for upcoming assembly phases. • Process ownership: Test, implement, and hand off operations and tools to production technicians for repeated use. • Design feedback: Provide manufacturing and assembly insights to SPARC sub-system designs through formal and informal design reviews. • Non-conformance resolution: Disposition and resolve part or process issues, incorporating red-line changes into updated assembly sequences. • Hands-on support: Assist in direct Tokamak assembly operations as needed, working collaboratively with adjacent sub-system teams (Metrology, Assembly Process, etc.). This role demands deep technical expertise, extreme ownership mentality, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic construction environment where precision and problem-solving are critical. Requirements: • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering • 7+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience • Demonstrated project ownership • 4+ years overseeing in-progress construction, manufacturing, or assembly/integration processes • 4+ years of CAD software experience • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs • Ability to perform extended periods of typing, standing, stooping, climbing, or sitting • Required on-site 5 days/week during active assembly operations; possible first or second shift assignment • Ability to work safely in industrial environments with heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage/current, pressure systems, and cryogenics Bonus qualifications: • 3+ years with Siemens NX • Lifting operations experience • Welding knowledge • Piping and tubing construction/joining expertise • Experience with highly complex or delicate assemblies • Assembly/integration in tightly packaged spaces • Fast-paced construction or manufacturing build experience • Design of alignment and positioning fixtures • Heavy component manipulation and large-structure welding
