Salary: USD 166,000 - 220,000 / annual
Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, is seeking a Senior Explosives System Safety Engineer to lead the munitions, warhead, and fuzing certification efforts across the organization. This role combines deep technical expertise with team leadership, requiring the successful candidate to shepherd programs through critical DoD weapons safety review boards (WSERB, FISTRP, SSSTRP) while building and managing a team of 3–10 system safety engineers.
You will own end-to-end certification programs, building lasting relationships with review entities to accelerate the approval process. Beyond individual technical contributions, you'll set organizational standards for weapons safety certification, creating scalable frameworks that support Anduril's growth across multiple defense programs.
Key responsibilities include: leading munitions and warhead certification programs through DoD review boards; hiring, mentoring, and developing a growing team of safety engineers; creating and presenting comprehensive safety documentation packages to internal stakeholders, customers, and government boards; embedding safety practices into product development from inception; planning and driving testing and analysis milestones to minimize certification timelines; conducting root cause analysis and corrective actions; managing project deliverables including requirements, change control, and traceability matrices; establishing precedent for government reviews across future programs; and managing key vendors (ESAD, warhead suppliers, etc.).
This is hands-on, high-stakes ordnance work at the cutting edge of defense technology. You'll partner closely with engineering, program management, and operations teams to ensure safety is integrated throughout the development lifecycle. Travel for testing and customer meetings may surge to 25% annually.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS or higher degree in mechanical, systems, aerospace, or related engineering discipline
- 8+ years of experience in design, safety, certification, and systems engineering of ordnance systems
- 2+ years of experience leading, managing, or technically directing a team of engineers
- Demonstrated experience with warhead/fuze review boards (WSERB, FISTRP, AFSRB, or equivalent)
- Munitions system certification or qualification experience
- Deep working knowledge of MIL-STD-882E, MIL-STD-1316, and MIL-STD-1901
- Experience in program management, customer and vendor management, and managing schedules and budgets
- Ability to travel for testing and customer meetings (up to 25% annually)
- Experience preparing formal safety documentation (specifications, test procedures, technical reports)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for presenting to safety boards and managing stakeholders
- Must be able to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance
- Subject to pre-employment and randomized substance screening
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Active U.S. security clearance (DoD Secret, Top Secret, or DOE L/Q)
- Prior experience qualifying ordnance/munitions through multiple branches of the Department of War
- Established relationships with key members of DoW System Safety qualification boards
- Experience managing vendors providing services in support of safety qualifications
- Track record of building or scaling a safety engineering function in a fast-paced or growth-stage environment
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and establishing team processes, standards, and playbooks
