DeepL is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Voice for Meetings team, which builds real-time AI voice technology for professional collaboration. The team works on in-call transcription, translation, and voice intelligence delivered live across meeting platforms. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will manage a small team of senior engineers, own hiring and career development, and drive end-to-end delivery of real-time voice features from architecture through production.
Key responsibilities include leading and growing the engineering team while staying close enough to the code to have credible technical opinions. You will own the technical direction for your team's systems, work in a tight loop with the Principal Product Manager and senior technical lead to shape what gets built, and operate confidently at the boundary with applied science—understanding how inference, preprocessing, and training data drift affect the product. You'll make and communicate clear technical trade-offs under real constraints including latency budgets, model quality, and timelines.
The role requires identifying risks and gaps beyond your immediate remit and building a high-agency, low-bureaucracy culture where engineers are trusted to make decisions and take genuine ownership. You will spot problems early and fix them properly, leaving teams around you better off.
Ideal candidates have directly managed engineers and owned team delivery, performance, and development. You are a builder comfortable in the trenches with real technical skills and no interest in managing from a distance. You have led teams building product that users touch—real-time systems, streaming, distributed systems at scale—where technical depth was the substance of the work. You have enough credibility to earn confidence from senior engineers, can reason about architecture, spot failure modes, and add judgment to technical decisions. You have pragmatic understanding of how ML systems behave in production and think independently, drawing those instincts out of people around you. Strong product and commercial instinct is essential for framing engineering trade-offs in terms of user and business outcomes.
