Okta Identity Governance (OIG) is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager, SDET to own the quality strategy for one of Okta's most critical product areas. OIG is responsible for enterprise identity governance workflows—access requests, approvals, entitlement enforcement, and audit compliance—and is the leading contributor to Okta's new product bookings, running in some of the world's largest enterprises with hundreds of thousands of identities and thousands of applications per tenant. In this role, you will lead a distributed team of 10 scrum teams of quality engineers and SDETs across Canada, the US, and India. You'll own the end-to-end quality strategy for OIG, including test approach, coverage models, automation architecture, test environments, and release readiness aligned to product pillar goals. Key responsibilities include: - Developing and executing quality strategy for OIG, setting how the team tests governance at enterprise scale (long-running certification campaigns, multi-million entitlement tenants, third-party connectors, audit records) - Leading, growing, and retaining a distributed team; owning team calibration, promotion planning, and recruiting as hiring manager - Coaching engineers on growth with actionable feedback while delegating effectively to avoid bottlenecks - Driving automation strategy across API, integration, and UI layers to convert manual regression into deterministic CI/CD gates - Owning quality signals (escaped defects, coverage, flaky test rates, time-to-detect) to drive release decisions - Leading scale and data-integrity testing for large-tenant campaigns, bulk operations, and high-volume imports - Embedding quality engineers into architecture and design reviews to shape testability and risk analysis early - Managing team investment mix, workstream expectations, and team health to prevent burnout - Partnering across engineering, product, design, docs, and support to turn escaped defects and RCAs into durable automated coverage Quality in this context is a compliance bar, not just a UX one. Governance product defects can leave companies over-provisioned on access they believe was revoked or provide auditors with incorrect evidence. Requirements: - 10+ years in quality or test engineering, or software engineering with a quality focus, shipping enterprise cloud software - 4+ years managing engineers, including distributed teams and multiple concurrent workstreams - Track record of owning quality strategy for a product area, not just executing test plans - Hands-on depth in test automation at scale: Java, Python, or TypeScript; API automation (REST, gRPC); UI automation (Playwright, Selenium, or equivalent) - Experience with CI/CD (CircleCI or equivalent), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and a major cloud platform - Experience testing multi-tenant SaaS, including asynchronous, event-driven systems and data reconciliation - Ability to make trade-off and risk calls against real constraints and communicate them clearly - Record of growing people, including building cases for promotions - Experience recruiting, mentoring, and retaining engineers Extra credit for: - Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) experience (Okta, SailPoint, Saviynt, One Identity, Oracle, or in-house) - Broader Identity and Access Management experience (SSO, SCIM provisioning, directory integration, privileged access) - Testing in compliance contexts (SOX, SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP) including audit evidence validation - Performance, scale, or resilience engineering for data-heavy enterprise workloads - Managing managers or tech leads
