As Senior Engineering Manager for Platform, you will lead the team responsible for foundational platform capabilities: shared services, core infrastructure, developer tooling, and operational standards. You'll report to the Director of Engineering and manage a team of senior and staff-level engineers.
Key responsibilities include:
**Team Leadership & Growth**: Build and grow a high-performing team of senior and staff engineers. Set clear expectations, provide direct feedback, and maintain a culture of technical excellence while keeping velocity high.
**Technical Direction**: Partner with staff engineers on architecture decisions across infrastructure, shared services, and system design. Ensure the platform supports AI-powered capabilities reliably and securely. Keep the team focused on highest-leverage work and unblock complex execution.
**Delivery & Platform Health**: Own platform initiatives from planning through production. Define and drive platform health metrics (performance, resiliency, cost efficiency, operational maturity). Build strong on-call and incident response practices with SRE. Balance reactive work with strategic initiatives.
**AI Infrastructure Support**: Partner with AI platform and security teams to ensure AI workloads run on observable, cost-aware, and secure infrastructure. Help the team adopt AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully.
**Product Partnership**: Collaborate with the Lead Product Manager to shape roadmap and translate strategy into buildable plans. Bring technical risk, system health signals, and engineer-identified pain points into prioritization.
**Cross-functional Leadership**: Drive alignment on multi-team initiatives. Represent platform engineering across the organization. Ensure security, privacy, and compliance (especially FERPA and student data protection) are central to all platform decisions.
**Requirements**:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years managing engineers (ideally on platform, infrastructure, or developer experience teams)
- Proven track record managing and growing senior and staff-level individual contributors with a leadership style rooted in clarity, trust, and example
- Strong technical credibility and hands-on capability to earn trust with senior engineers; AWS background strongly preferred; Terraform and Kubernetes a significant plus
- Demonstrated success partnering with product counterparts on shared roadmaps and building alignment across engineering, security, and operations
- Delivery discipline: ships reliably, defines completion criteria, resists scope creep
- Developer experience focus: improves productivity through CI/CD, internal tooling, and self-service infrastructure
- Experience with security and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, FERPA) and data protection/privacy practices
- Experience with monitoring and observability at scale
- Familiarity with infrastructure demands of AI workloads and sound judgment about platform support needs
- Experience helping engineering teams adopt AI-assisted tools and workflows
- Computer Science, Engineering, or related degree preferred
