Salary: USD 204,000 - 306,000 / annual

Duolingo is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Monetization Pillar, which owns the company's key business drivers: subscriptions, ads, and in-app purchases. You will co-lead a cross-functional pod with Product and Design to define strategy, success metrics, and execution roadmaps for one of Duolingo's monetization teams. Key responsibilities include: - Managing and building a team of software engineers, with demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain talent - Co-leading strategy and execution with Product and Design partners to ship premium experiences that feel native to Duolingo—delightful, well-paced, and respectful of learners - Collaborating with data science and ML teams to design experiments, apply personalization and targeting, and translate insights into product improvements and revenue growth - Owning planning and execution for projects that directly impact revenue, identifying team-level metrics to optimize and managing delivery through clear milestones and risk management - Bringing both technical and product perspectives to new ideas, enabling rapid hypothesis testing without sacrificing reliability, observability, or long-term maintainability - Setting and upholding engineering quality standards and practices that improve reliability, scalability, and operability Required qualifications: - Experience leading, managing, and building teams of software engineers - Direct experience working on engineering teams that build and operate monetization systems - Track record of owning multi-engineer, multi-week technical projects in highly experimental, data-driven environments - Strong product instincts and excellent communication skills; ability to align diverse stakeholders across engineering, product, design, and analytics - Experience working closely with data, experimentation, or machine learning teams - Demonstrated ability to raise the bar on engineering practices for reliability, scalability, and observability - Technical depth sufficient to guide architecture and implementation trade-offs and mentor engineers Exceptional candidates may have deep experience with ad mediation systems (AdMob, GAM, Open Bidding), designing in-product ad formats for mobile apps, improving ad quality through experimentation, collaborating on direct/programmatic campaigns, or leading cross-platform teams with ML-powered personalization.
