Alan is a prevention-focused health insurance company serving 1M+ members across 40K+ companies in France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada. The company has reached €800M+ ARR and employs 1000+ people.
You will lead the Offer Area engineering team, which owns the entire offer lifecycle for health insurance, life & disability insurance, and employee benefits across four countries. This team is responsible for:
- Offer creation: Building tools that enable Sales to create compliant, relevant offers in minutes using real-time pricing and AI assistance, eliminating multi-day waits for actuaries.
- Contract lifecycle management: Managing a portfolio of 100K+ contracts with tools for Business Ops to pilot and adjust offerings over time.
- Growth enablement: Serving as the foundation of Alan's insurance stack, unblocking other teams (Claims, Billing) and enabling expansion into new segments and markets.
Key initiatives include:
- Building a unified insurance stack across countries: Replacing country-by-country code with a shared "Core Stack" that accommodates local differences. Spain already runs on it; France is next. Your architectural decisions will shape how Alan sells insurance for the next decade.
- AI-native underwriting: Empowering Sales teams to build compliant offers themselves with AI-assisted smart alternatives, price explanations, and pitching tools.
- Elevating Life & Disability products to first-class status alongside Health, with mature member experience, ops, and broader population access.
- Growing and shaping the team: You will hire, mentor, and decide the team's focus areas, owning talent density, onboarding, feedback, and skill mix.
- Technical direction and operational excellence: Making architecture decisions, setting quality standards, shaping organizational structure, and managing incident response as the company scales to more countries.
This is a hands-on role: engineering leaders at Alan are expected to write code, review pull requests, and ship features themselves alongside their management responsibilities.
The role offers dual impact—shaping both technical excellence and team growth—with a short feedback loop between building and impact. Your users (hundreds of Alan employees) sit nearby, enabling rapid iteration. You'll have direct business impact on Alan's margin and growth through pricing, contract lifecycle, and Sales tooling decisions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years leading engineering teams with a track record of building high performers
- Experience establishing engineering excellence standards and guiding architectural decisions
- First-hand experience shipping AI or LLM products to production (preferred)
- Comfort writing code, reviewing it, and shipping features yourself
- Familiarity with modern development practices and AI-assisted development tools
- Ability to partner with product functions as an equal, shaping roadmap and naming trade-offs honestly
- Demonstrated ability to develop people as much as products
- Curiosity, humility, collaboration, and eagerness to grow
- Excitement about healthcare technology and innovation
- Understanding that great engineering teams are built on psychological safety and continuous learning
The company notes that ex-founders are typically a great fit and encourages applications from candidates who don't check every box, particularly women (research shows women apply only when meeting 100% of requirements).
