Salary: USD 204,000 - 306,000 / annual
Duolingo is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a high-impact product engineering team focused on user growth and engagement. You will co-lead a cross-functional team to improve learner habit formation and long-term engagement through feature development, owning the team's roadmap, execution, and outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Co-leading a cross-functional team with product management partners to align on strategy, priorities, and success metrics for growth-driving features
- Driving project execution from specification through implementation, experimentation, analysis, and ongoing ownership while ensuring infrastructure reliability and scalability
- Using data and rapid experimentation to inform decisions; designing A/B tests and translating insights into product improvements that measurably impact retention KPIs
- Attracting, growing, and retaining diverse engineering talent through clear expectations, coaching, and career development
- Setting engineering quality standards and processes that balance speed with long-term maintainability; proactively managing technical debt and operational excellence
- Collaborating with product, design, research, and other engineering teams to deliver impactful user experiences
- Defining team OKRs, ruthlessly prioritizing, and removing roadblocks
Required qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience leading and managing software engineering teams with a track record of hiring, developing, and retaining talent
- Track record of shipping multi-engineer, multi-week+ projects with measurable business impact
- Strong product instincts and comfort in experimental, data-driven environments; experience with A/B testing and analytics
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management across engineering, product, design, and data
- Technical depth to guide architecture and implementation trade-offs and mentor engineers
- Ability to work from or relocate to Pittsburgh, PA or New York, NY
