Twilio is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Communication Identity Domain, overseeing engineering teams responsible for Porting, Hosting, and A2P Messaging products. These products enable customers to bring their own phone numbers onto Twilio, activate existing numbers for messaging without a full port, and register and operate compliant Application-to-Person messaging campaigns at scale.
In this role, you will own the delivery roadmap for the Communication Identity Domain, including customer-facing services, internal platform APIs, and operational tooling. You will lead a team of 10+ engineers, managing individual contributors and fostering a culture of psychological safety, candid feedback, and career growth. Your responsibilities include:
- Translating long-term technical strategy into executable quarterly plans and measurable outcomes, partnering with Principal and Staff Engineers
- Driving adoption of AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Anthropic Claude, or internal LLMs) within your team, setting expectations for AI-augmented workflows and measuring impact on velocity
- Taking full accountability for operational excellence, including system reliability, incident response, on-call health, and security posture
- Serving two customer bases with equal rigor: external customers (ensuring seamless communication identity workflows) and internal customers (dependent engineering teams relying on your APIs and tooling)
- Recruiting, developing, and retaining world-class engineers; coaching engineers from mid-level to staff-plus to reach their full potential
- Navigating competing priorities across external product features, internal platform needs, and operational tooling investments, with a clear framework for prioritization
- Communicating team strategy, progress, and risks clearly to engineering leadership and cross-functional partners through written plans, post-mortems, and decision documents
- Acting as the primary point of contact between the Communication Identity Domain and stakeholders, managing relationships with Product Management, external-facing teams, and internal engineering teams
- Modeling integrity and creating an environment where engineers feel safe raising concerns and challenging the status quo
The role requires deep technical expertise in highly available, cloud-native distributed systems, with hands-on background in designing and operating such systems. You must be able to engage deeply in architectural reviews and evaluate technical proposals, earning the trust of senior engineers. You will champion AI-driven development practices and ensure your team stays at the forefront of modern software engineering.
Qualifications:
Required:
- 15+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5+ years in engineering management, leading a team of 10+ engineers and directly managing individual contributors
- Strong hands-on background in designing and operating highly available, cloud-native distributed systems; ability to engage deeply in architectural reviews and evaluate technical proposals
- Deep familiarity with AWS ecosystems (Lambda, EKS, DynamoDB, Kafka), microservices patterns, and infrastructure-as-code practices (Kubernetes, Terraform)
- Demonstrated experience driving AI tool adoption within engineering teams; ability to articulate a clear vision for how AI accelerates delivery and quality
- Proven track record of shipping complex software products on time and at high quality; experience with agile methodologies and data-driven approaches to measuring team health and productivity
- Track record of building diverse, inclusive, high-performing engineering teams; experience with career frameworks, performance management, and growing engineers from mid-level to staff-plus
- Strong ability to communicate technical strategy, trade-offs, and team plans to engineering leadership, cross-functional partners, and direct reports
- Proven ability to manage relationships across multiple stakeholder groups with competing needs; experience balancing external customer commitments with internal platform obligations
- Experience owning system reliability for mission-critical services, including incident management, on-call rotations, and SLO-driven operational improvements
Desired:
- Experience leading a team that builds internal platforms or operational tooling serving other engineering teams, with a product mindset toward internal customers
- Experience growing and evolving a team through periods of change, including onboarding new engineers, reshaping team processes, and managing through ambiguity
