Duolingo is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Monetization Pillar, which drives the company's key business initiatives around subscriptions, ads, and in-app purchases. You will co-lead a cross-functional pod with Product and Design to define strategy, success metrics, and execution roadmaps for one of Duolingo's monetization teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Co-leading cross-functional strategy and roadmap definition with Product and Design partners
- Shipping delightful, well-paced premium experiences that respect learners while driving monetization performance
- Collaborating with data science and ML teams to design experiments, apply personalization and targeting, and translate insights into product improvements and revenue growth
- Owning planning and execution for revenue-impacting projects, identifying team-level metrics to optimize, and managing delivery through clear milestones and risk management
- Bringing technical and product perspectives to new ideas, enabling rapid hypothesis testing without sacrificing reliability or maintainability
- Setting and upholding engineering quality standards for reliability, scalability, and operability
Required qualifications:
- Proven experience leading and managing software engineering teams with demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain talent
- Direct experience on engineering teams building and operating monetization systems
- Track record of owning multi-engineer, multi-week technical projects in experimental, data-driven environments
- Strong product instincts and excellent communication skills; ability to align diverse stakeholders across engineering, product, design, and analytics
- Experience working closely with data, experimentation, or ML teams to inform prioritization and ship measurable impact
- Demonstrated ability to raise engineering standards for reliability, scalability, and observability
- Technical depth to guide architecture and implementation trade-offs, evolve quality standards, and mentor engineers
Preferred qualifications include deep experience with subscription systems at scale (billing, entitlements, StoreKit/Google Play Billing, receipt validation, renewals, refunds), designing and shipping paywalls and upgrade flows in mobile apps, running high-velocity experimentation programs on revenue surfaces with ML-powered personalization, experience with pricing and packaging levers, demonstrated impact on subscriber retention and churn reduction, and fluency with subscription economics and key metrics (trial-to-paid, ARPU, gross vs. net bookings, cohort retention, LTV/CAC).
