Salary: USD 200,000 - 250,000 / annual
Propel builds technology to strengthen America's social safety net, serving over 5.5 million users. The company has grown revenue 35% YoY and is reinventing how government benefits are delivered—making SNAP, Medicare, and other programs as seamless as consumer apps like Apple Pay or Netflix.
You'll join as Engineering Manager and Tech Lead for the Marketplace team, which connects Propel's 5M+ monthly active users to products, services, and exclusive offers from leading brands in grocery, retail, healthcare, telecoms, financial services, and auto.
This is a hybrid player-coach role: you'll design the technical system architecture for the marketplace while managing 3–5 engineers across multiple sub-teams. You'll champion hiring and team development, foster a diverse engineering culture, and help the team align on vision as the product scales.
Key responsibilities:
- Set technical vision for the marketplace and build systems that serve offers efficiently and effectively
- Manage and coach 3–5 reports at various levels; help them advance their careers
- Develop team processes to foster consistency and collaboration in a remote-first culture
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with product, design, and data; advocate for systemic improvements
- Ensure smooth onboarding for new engineers and iterate on the process
The role is based in Downtown Brooklyn with remote flexibility. Propel is backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Omidyar Network, Kevin Durant, Serena Williams, and Nas. Requirements:
- 10+ years designing and developing web or mobile applications, especially in ad tech or consumer products
- 2+ years managing engineers at various levels in a startup, remote-first environment
- Strong AI skills and systematic thinking about when and where to apply AI effectively
- Growth mindset, curiosity, and desire to understand the Marketplace business model
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Passion for improving lives of low-income Americans
- Plus: experience with or knowledge of government services (SNAP, WIC, TANF, SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, Section 8)
