Sila Nanotechnologies is a next-generation battery materials company focused on powering the world's transition to clean energy. The company engineers and manufactures breakthrough battery materials that significantly increase energy density while reducing size and weight, enabling smaller, more powerful batteries for consumer devices and electric vehicles.
You will serve as a Senior R&D Test Engineer, leading the design, execution, and analysis of experiments on lab and pilot-scale equipment. Working at the intersection of material science, process engineering, equipment engineering, systems engineering, and data science, you will deliver critical data that informs how equipment design, process conditions, and material structure interact—enabling data-driven decisions for scale-up.
Key responsibilities include conducting complete R&D projects in collaboration with engineering teams (test planning, experimental design, preparation, execution, analysis, and results communication); crafting and executing effective experimental test plans; identifying failure modes and root causes while implementing robust solutions; providing critical insights through hands-on experience and deep process knowledge; managing test platforms to world-class standards; and formulating, leading, and facilitating complex data analysis projects.
You will work as part of a growing, dynamic test engineering team, collaborating with engineers, scientists, and technicians. You are expected to turn raw data into critical insights, run toward problems, and provide excellent communication in technical discussions and debates.
Physical demands include passing a respirator fit test and wearing respiratory protection daily, wearing personal protective equipment (lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes), moving items up to 50 lbs with lift equipment, moving long distances and standing for extended periods, reaching low shelves, precise and repetitive material handling, and operating computers and office equipment.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or physical sciences (Mechanical Engineering, Physics, etc.); advanced degrees preferred
- 4+ years of relevant professional experience (advanced degree may substitute for a portion of required experience)
- Exceptional laboratory testing aptitude with intuition for what will work and ability to execute quickly and effectively
- Experience conducting or leading experimental R&D projects
- Demonstrated experience with complex reactive or thermo-mechanical systems (reactors, generators, catalytic systems, flow cells, or similar)
- Understanding and proven application of mechanical, process, and materials engineering principles (heat, flow, structures, thermodynamics, kinetics, materials)
- Experience with data analysis and sufficient knowledge to navigate data platforms in Python
- Experience developing and deploying new instrumentation and measurement systems
- Demonstrated experience in electronics, wiring, and instrumentation (analog signals, AC/DC power fundamentals, control wiring, diagnostic tools) and implementing lab or field-deployed electronics, sensors, and actuators
