Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company developing intelligent autonomy systems, aircraft platforms, and simulation technologies to protect service members and civilians. This Senior Engineer role focuses on the HMS (Hivemind Modeling & Simulation) Simulation Framework, a critical component of Shield AI's simulation and synthetic reality technology stack.
You will own the technical architecture and implementation of simulation software adapters, plugins, and interfaces that connect multiple simulation environments (AFSIM, NGTS, Aechelon, HMSSimBlocks, HMSF) with autonomy systems and visual generators. Key responsibilities include:
• Writing, compiling, and maintaining baseline software adapters, plugins, and interfaces in C++ and Python for multiple simulation frameworks
• Leading the hands-on technical migration from HMSSimBlocks to HMSF, porting custom HMS simulation features while maintaining support for legacy systems
• Designing and implementing a reusable CIGI plugin layer across simulation frameworks to enable seamless visual communication with Aechelon image generators
• Architecting simulation frameworks and baseline plugins for extensibility, creating clear templates and code patterns that allow other teams to integrate custom sensors or models
• Maintaining functional parity across simulation plugins with respect to CSF file loading, DDS communication, GRID interface standards, and Hivemind SDK updates
• Supporting integration teams in debugging complex simulation-autonomy issues by analyzing framework behavior, network data, DDS traffic, and API call-stacks
• Writing robust unit tests, automated integration tests, and comprehensive code documentation
This is a hands-on technical role requiring deep expertise in simulation frameworks, middleware, and systems integration. You'll work across multiple portfolios and be a key technical resource for teams integrating custom capabilities into the simulation ecosystem.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience)
• Strong software development background in C++ and Python within a Linux environment
• Solid software engineering fundamentals including version control (Git), automated testing, and disciplined debugging
• Experience writing or maintaining plugins, baseline interfaces, or modeling frameworks for simulation environments such as AFSIM, NGTS, or similar
• Familiarity with network protocols (UDP/TCP), DDS middleware, serialization, or interface standards (such as CIGI)
• Excellent technical troubleshooting skills and ability to help other developers resolve integration bugs
• Ability to obtain and maintain an active U.S. SECRET security clearance (U.S. citizenship required)
