Join Xero's AI Enablement team as a Senior Software Engineer, where you'll build internal platforms and tools that help engineers across the organization work more effectively with AI. This is an end-to-end ownership role: you'll move projects from early experimentation through production, including writing runbooks, setting up monitoring, and designing rollback strategies to ensure reliability. You'll have significant influence on Xero's AI strategy. Key responsibilities include: - Building an internal skills marketplace and distribution platform for AI tools used across the engineering organization - Developing guidance and best practices for authoring agent skills, including agents for remediation tasks - Collaborating directly with AWS, Microsoft, and GitHub on early-access technology not yet available in the market - Shaping the technical direction of AI enablement platforms and practices - Guiding a team that is early in its AI journey The AI Enablement team sits within Engineering Experience and is spread across Melbourne, Sydney, and the Sunshine Coast, with a product manager in Wellington. The team works collaboratively across time zones with regular in-person boost days. The current tech stack includes C#, .NET, and AWS, with Python and TypeScript used for AI tooling. You'll work on building reliable, production-grade internal platforms that other engineers depend on daily. You can be based anywhere in Australia or New Zealand. The role is hybrid with flexibility across locations, though regular in-person collaboration is part of the team culture. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: - Hands-on software engineering experience, ideally with C#, .NET, and AWS (experience with other stacks is acceptable as strong engineers pick up new technologies quickly) - Track record of building internal tools or platforms that other engineers genuinely relied on - Production discipline: you write runbooks, set up monitoring, and think through rollback strategies before deployment - Clear communication skills and ability to bring people along with ideas, not just ship code independently - Curiosity about coding agents and AI-native tools, with awareness of where AI engineering is heading - Ability to challenge decisions directly and respectfully, and to learn new things in a structured, quality-focused way
