Buildkite is a CI/CD platform trusted by leading engineering teams including Canva, Meta, Mistral AI, and NVIDIA. The platform helps ship software used by over 1 billion people daily, running builds, tests, and deployments on customer infrastructure, Buildkite's hosted agents, or hybrid setups.
You'll join the Agent team, which owns the open-source Buildkite Agent—the critical infrastructure that runs on engineers' machines, in their clouds, and in Buildkite's hosted environment. This team sits at the intersection of deep infrastructure work and the emerging AI agents landscape. The agent is foundational; everything else depends on it, so reliability and thoughtful iteration matter enormously.
In this role, you'll ship features end-to-end: from conception through trade-off analysis, production rollout, and incident response. You'll break large problems into weekly-shippable increments rather than pursuing eight-month perfection. You'll own features completely—designing for partial failures, reversible migrations, and production observability. You'll rotate through "Sweep" (two weeks every eight) to handle support requests, work with Solutions Engineers, and field high-impact quick wins. You'll bring ideas to the roadmap, not just execute against it. You'll handle incidents, mentor through code review and pairing, and communicate clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
The team values shipping velocity, obsessive problem-solving, and real production ownership. You'll work with Go (primary language for agent and infrastructure) and Ruby on Rails (platform backbone). Bonus experience includes Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform, PostgreSQL optimization, React, and GraphQL. You should have demonstrated production ownership—not "I was on the team" but "I was responsible, and here's what broke and what I changed."
