Butlr is an AI-powered platform for intelligent spaces, spun out of MIT Media Lab in 2019. The company combines AI with anonymous body-heat sensing to deliver privacy-first people sensing without cameras or PII, with hardware-enforced privacy. Butlr has deployed over 30,000 privacy-preserving sensors globally across enterprises, senior living, healthcare, labs, and commercial real estate, and has been recognized as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. As a Senior Embedded Engineer, you will own significant portions of the embedded software stack end-to-end, spanning firmware, OS builds, connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. This is a hands-on role at the cutting edge of IoT and edge computing within a rapidly growing company. Key responsibilities include: **Architecture & Collaboration:** Design and implement major components of the embedded software stack for IoT gateways and edge devices. Participate in design and code reviews to uphold engineering standards. Collaborate across hardware, firmware, QA, and cloud teams on integration and debugging. Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and technologies. **Platform & Connectivity:** Develop firmware for MCU-based edge sensors, including RTOS tasks, drivers, sensor integration, wireless stacks, and low-power design. Build and maintain embedded Linux OS images using Yocto or Debian-based distributions, BSPs, kernel modules, and device drivers. Implement multi-interface connectivity (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, LTE/4G, Wi-Fi HaLow, PoE) with failover and recovery. Integrate edge ML inference and cloud middleware (AWS IoT Core, MQTT, REST APIs). **Security, OTA & Reliability:** Implement security features including secure boot, signed firmware, certificate management, and access control. Develop and maintain OTA firmware update flows with rollback protection and staged rollout. Implement system health telemetry, watchdog mechanisms, auto-recovery, and remote diagnostics. **Testing & Performance:** Develop embedded test plans and contribute to CI/CD pipelines for firmware builds and validation. Perform peripheral bring-up, SoC driver integration, and RF/sensor validation. Profile and optimize performance across CPU, memory, I/O, storage, and network. Required qualifications: 7+ years hands-on embedded software development; BS in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field; deep C/C++ expertise in RTOS and embedded Linux; hands-on embedded Linux builds (Yocto/Debian), BSPs, kernel/driver development; networking stacks and multi-interface connectivity experience; OTA firmware update systems and cloud-IoT integration (AWS IoT Core, Azure, or equivalent); low-power design for battery-operated devices; strong communication skills.
