Cambridge Aerospace is seeking a Senior Electronics Hardware Engineer to design and develop avionics and electronic systems for advanced defense platforms. In this role, you will own the complete hardware development lifecycle—from translating system requirements into hardware specifications, through circuit design and PCB layout, prototyping, testing, and production qualification.
You will work on embedded systems, power electronics, sensor networks, RF, high-speed digital, and electro-mechanical systems. Key responsibilities include:
• Translate system requirements into hardware requirements, interface definitions, design assumptions, and verification objectives
• Own complete design cycles including schematics, design documentation, circuit analysis, and multilayer PCB layouts for embedded, mixed-signal, high-speed digital, RF, and power electronics using industry-standard CAD tools
• Collaborate with software, FPGA, and mechanical engineering teams to develop hardware architectures for complex, demanding applications
• Plan and execute structured hardware prototyping, bring-up, debugging, robustness testing, fault injection, and environmental testing
• Verify designs against requirements and contribute to subsystem testing including embedded systems, electro-mechanical systems, power distribution, and sensor nodes
• Scale designs for production and manage qualification testing for reliability, environmental, and EMC standards compliance
• Assess electronics architectures and designs for robustness, failure behaviors, testability, and future qualifications
You will be part of a fast-growing defense technology company backed by leading venture funds, working on low-cost interceptor systems and surveillance platforms to address emerging aerial threats.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum 5 years of professional experience in electronics development, ideally in high-reliability, mission-critical, or safety-critical applications (avionics, space, automotive, medical, industrial safety)
• Degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
• Strong schematic design and circuit analysis skills including high-speed digital, mixed-signal, and power electronics
• Hands-on professional experience designing PCBs using CAD tools (Altium, KiCad, Cadence, or equivalent)
• Experience with embedded hardware, microcontrollers, and digital interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, LVDS, etc.)
• Practical hands-on experience with hardware bring-up, debugging, and structured testing using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers)
• Understanding of EMC/EMI design principles
• Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and standards
PREFERRED:
• Experience in fast-paced R&D or startup environments with rapid prototype iteration
• Experience designing complex electronics for volume production and manufacturing scale-up
• Experience delivering electronics designs for defense applications
• Strong knowledge of power electronics or electro-mechanical systems
• Experience designing electronics with RF functionality
