Amperesand is building next-generation power infrastructure hardware and software to support the modern energy transition. The company has developed intelligent, software-defined power infrastructure products based on advanced medium-voltage Solid State Transformer (SST) technology, now ready for commercial deployment. With offices in San Francisco, Reno, and Singapore, Amperesand is addressing a critical infrastructure gap: electricity demand is surging due to AI data centers, electric vehicles, and industrial growth, yet the power grid infrastructure hasn't fundamentally evolved in nearly 100 years.
As a Senior Electronics Design Engineer, you will design and develop the low-voltage and mixed-signal hardware that controls, senses, and protects SST subsystems. You'll own circuit boards end-to-end—from schematic design through prototype bring-up, validation, and production release—while contributing to architectural decisions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design low-voltage and mixed-signal circuits balancing performance, reliability, safety, cost, and manufacturability
- Select microcontrollers and key integrated circuits; engage with silicon vendors on evaluation and errata review
- Design and validate control, sensing, and protection circuitry including analog measurement chains, digital I/O, and fault detection
- Design isolated interface circuits such as signal isolators, isolated DC-DC converters, and fiber optic links between voltage domains
- Build redundancy and fault tolerance into designs to meet single-fault-tolerant and lifetime requirements; contribute to DFMEA and derating reviews
- Implement industrial and high-bandwidth communication interfaces (Gigabit Ethernet, CAN, Modbus) with attention to signal integrity
- Partner with PCB layout engineers to define stackup, impedance, isolation, and routing constraints; execute layout directly when needed
- Own full lifecycle development: specifications, schematics, BOM, prototyping, bring-up, EMI/EMC compliance, and production release
- Collaborate with firmware and mechanical engineers on interface timing, connector placement, thermal management, and enclosure integration
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for traceability and compliance
Required qualifications: BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent industry experience. 5+ years designing low-voltage and mixed-signal hardware with some experience in high-reliability or high-voltage systems. Proven track record taking boards from schematic through bring-up and production, including MCU selection and protection circuitry. Strong analog and mixed-signal design skills with knowledge of component selection and derating for harsh environments. Experience designing isolated interface circuits between voltage domains and hands-on experience with communication interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN/CAN-FD, or Modbus.
