Relativity Space is building the Terran R rocket using advanced 3D printing technology to serve growing launch capacity demands. The Structures and Mechanisms team owns the full design, build, and test lifecycle of integrated structures and flight mechanisms for the vehicle.
As a Senior Electro-Mechanical Engineer, you will guide the design of critical Terran R mechanisms including stage separation systems, payload deployment, aerodynamic control features, and landing gear. You'll work across the full design cycle—from conceptualization and trade studies through design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing. Your scope encompasses innovative mechanism design leveraging additive manufacturing's design freedom, with hands-on hardware ownership and direct visibility into flight hardware on the factory floor.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and test stage separation and fairing deployment systems
- Conceptualize landing gear and aero surface actuation solutions
- Define design criteria and subsystem requirements
- Analyze static and dynamic load inputs, material properties, and manufacturing process constraints
- Conduct trade studies on mechanism design concepts and present findings to leadership
- Collaborate with structures, avionics, fluids, vehicle design, test, and loads teams
- Support additive manufacturing process development to enable integrated subsystem designs
