Portal Space Systems is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to architect and design spacecraft power systems. This role focuses on electrical power distribution, battery management, and bus-level architecture for next-generation orbital vehicles.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architecting spacecraft power systems: solar array interfaces, battery charge/discharge regulation, power distribution units (PDUs), and grounding schemes
- Leading development of the main spacecraft power bus with voltage regulation, load management, protection, and redundancy strategies
- Performing trade studies and system sizing for battery capacity, solar array performance, and bus architecture optimization
- Developing schematics, PCB layouts, and cable harnessing for power boards and interface hardware
- Driving hardware bring-up, functional testing, and fault isolation on power boards and integrated systems
- Collaborating with systems, mechanical, and thermal engineers to align EPS design with mission requirements
- Contributing to environmental testing for acceptance, qualification, and EMI/EMC compliance
- Coordinating with launch providers on interfaces and concept of operations during payload integration and launch
Required qualifications:
- B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or related field
- 5+ years designing power systems for aerospace, spacecraft, or high-reliability platforms
- Expertise in power electronics design: DC-DC converters, battery management systems, overcurrent/undervoltage protection
- Proficiency with ECAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer)
- Experience testing and debugging flight or flight-like power hardware
Preferred experience includes spacecraft power architectures, space-grade components, radiation effects, power system modeling tools (PLECS, SPICE), EPS integration on flight programs, and familiarity with NASA and ECSS standards.
This position requires ITAR eligibility (U.S. person status).
