Rocket Lab Robotics, based in Pasadena, CA, is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer II to lead the development and test of avionics hardware for advanced robotic systems used in space exploration and national security missions. The team has delivered flight-proven solutions including robotic arms, motion control systems, and solar array drive assemblies for NASA's Mars Perseverance Rover, CADRE lunar rovers, and other ambitious space missions.
In this role, you will take end-to-end ownership of electrical hardware for robotics and motor control applications, driving architecture decisions that advance control algorithms. You will work with FPGA and microcontroller systems, develop PCBA requirements in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams, and own design verification testing, system integration testing, and environmental testing (EMI/EMC, TVAC, shock, vibration). Your responsibilities include schematic capture and PCB layout using Altium Designer, oversight and mentorship of support engineers in layout, analysis, and test, production manufacturing support, and failure analysis for units in test, integration, or on-orbit operation.
You will bring 8+ years of electrical hardware design experience, including PCBA design with FPGAs, motor control applications, analog signal chains, SPICE circuit analysis, and board bring-up and debug. The ideal candidate can develop "blank sheet of paper" design concepts and has experience in space electronics design, including radiation mitigation (SEU/SEL), environmental testing, and FMEA. Additional valuable experience includes FPGA firmware design with Verilog, field-oriented control, switch-mode power supplies, rigid-flex PCB design, and systems modeling tools like Simulink.
