Valar Atomics is a Series A advanced nuclear energy company building scalable, factory-made nuclear power systems for industrial heat, hydrogen production, and next-generation manufacturing. The company is constructing its first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah.
You will join the IC&E (Instrumentation, Control & Electrical) Engineering team within the Fuel Manufacturing engineering group. This team designs and delivers the complete electrical infrastructure for Valar's fuel manufacturing facilities, from utility interconnection through medium-voltage (MV) distribution, low-voltage (LV) process systems, and emergency power.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will own the design and engineering of MV and LV electrical systems across the full discipline scope: power system studies, equipment specification, protection design, and commissioning support.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop electrical load lists and perform comprehensive power system studies (load flow, short circuit per ANSI/IEC, voltage drop, motor starting, harmonic analysis) using SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or equivalent software.
- Prepare arc flash hazard analysis per IEEE 1584 and substation grounding calculations per IEEE 80.
- Size transformers, cables, switchgear buses, capacitor banks, UPS/battery systems, and standby generators.
- Design single-line diagrams for MV and LV distribution from utility interface through MCCs and distribution boards; prepare equipment layouts, cable schedules, tray routing, and underground duct bank designs.
- Specify MV switchgear, LV switchboards, MCCs, distribution panelboards, VFDs, UPS systems, and generator packages; prepare electrical area classification drawings and hazardous area equipment specifications per NEC/CEC 500 or IEC 60079.
- Develop protection relay settings studies and time-current coordination plots; specify protection relays and metering equipment; prepare relay panel and MCC control wiring diagrams.
- Prepare technical specifications and data sheets; evaluate vendor bids; review vendor drawings, type test reports, and quality plans; witness factory acceptance tests.
- Lead vendor pre-qualification, technical bid evaluation, and award recommendations for major electrical packages; manage document review cycles and factory audits for safety-related or nuclear-classified equipment.
- Support pre-commissioning activities including insulation testing, continuity checks, relay secondary injection, and equipment energization.
- Mentor and develop junior electrical engineers; represent the electrical discipline at design reviews, HAZOP studies, AHJ meetings, and regulatory interactions; direct contractors and consultants on electrical scope.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline.
- 5+ years of electrical engineering experience in process, industrial, or power projects focused on MV/LV distribution system design.
- Proficiency in power system analysis software (SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or equivalent) with demonstrated experience in load flow, short circuit, and protection coordination studies.
- Experience preparing arc flash studies per IEEE 1584.
- Working knowledge of IEEE, NEMA, ANSI, CSA C22.1, and IEC 60364 electrical standards.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or equivalent electrical design tools.
