Urban Sky is a venture-backed aerospace startup designing, building, and operating stratospheric balloon systems. The company sends flight vehicles to the stratosphere weekly, collecting data for applications ranging from real-time wildfire monitoring to urban mapping. Government customers include the Department of War, NASA, and others.
As Senior Electrical Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and testing of electrical systems for high-altitude balloons. Key responsibilities include custom battery pack development and BMS design with UN testing compliance; ownership of PCB design from schematic capture through layout reviews and vendor interactions; development and execution of comprehensive test plans to validate hardware performance and reliability; hands-on guidance of board build-up and modification for rapid iteration; oversight of electrical system integration with mechanical and firmware subsystems; troubleshooting and resolution of electrical issues across development, integration, and flight operations; documentation of designs, processes, and results for traceability and knowledge sharing; and mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.
You will work within a small, supportive team of engineers, makers, developers, and doers in Denver, with the company also building operations in Texas. The role requires 5–8 years of experience in electrical system design, prototyping, and testing; a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; proficiency with PCB design tools such as Altium; and strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design. Experience with battery systems, high-altitude or aerospace applications, and regulatory compliance is valued.
