The Athletic is seeking a Senior Editor to join its 450+ person global sports newsroom. This is a full-time staff role based in London with hybrid working (3 days per week in office required). You will manage a small team of reporters focused on delivering news, features, and enterprise coverage across soccer/football, global sports, tennis, F1, and North American sports. Key responsibilities include: • Lead a small team of reporters with emphasis on news, features, and enterprise delivery • Generate and plan story ideas across soccer/football, particularly around key sporting calendar events • Edit and publish stories via WordPress, collaborating with social and programming teams to maximize audience reach • Maintain proficiency in SEO best practices • Work with writers to strengthen story ideas and develop single concepts into broader packages • Ensure editorial quality through copy editing, story structure refinement, and adherence to style guidelines • Add context to stories, edit in the writer's voice, ensure fairness, and provide structural guidance You will be comfortable editing in both UK and US English, have a news-driven outlook, and be willing to work weekends, early mornings, and evenings as the sporting calendar requires. REQUIREMENTS: • 3+ years of experience in digital sports journalism • Advanced ability to generate story ideas that drive solid engagement • Strong collaborative skills with writers; ability to develop single ideas into broader packages • Advanced understanding of copy editing, story structure, identifying problematic sentences, and style guidelines • Ability to add context, edit in writer's voice, ensure fairness, and provide story structure • High-end knowledge of football/soccer and other sports • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and early mornings when required by the sporting calendar
