Zanskar is revolutionizing geothermal energy exploration using advanced software and machine learning to make geothermal a cheap and scalable contributor to a carbon-free electrical grid. As a Senior Distributed Systems Engineer, you will design and maintain Zanskar's next-generation multi-physics well-targeting engine, a critical distributed compute system serving the company's scientific research teams. You'll join a team with an existing system that requires scaling and reliability improvements. Your role bridges software engineering and geoscience: you'll collaborate with geophysicists, geoscientists, seismologists, and engineers to solve hard problems in geothermal discovery while mentoring others in distributed systems best practices. Key responsibilities include architecting fault-tolerant, resilient event-driven architectures; building and managing orchestration systems for massive cloud-based workloads (serverless, Kubernetes, custom VM fleets); designing persistent data storage for digital artifacts using RDBMS and cloud blob storage at scale; and ensuring system observability through logging, monitoring, alerting, and metrics. Required qualifications: 7+ years software engineering in a business environment (ideally with scientific computing); proven experience leading distributed computing system design and implementation; expertise in Python and SQL; hands-on experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS); containerization (Docker); Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Pulumi); CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions); and version control (GitHub). Desirable experience includes experiment tracking, optimization methods, applied algorithm development, reinforcement learning, AI/ML techniques, web development, and familiarity with geoscience concepts.
