Atoms is building Physical AI—autonomous robots for real-world industries including mining, food production, and transport. This Director-level role leads the Vehicle Integration group, responsible for developing and testing autonomous vehicle platforms. You will own the complete integration lifecycle: hardware-in-the-loop and bench validation systems, electrical and harness architecture, sensor and compute placement, drive-by-wire integration, and the commissioning processes that take vehicles from development kits to fleet deployment.
Key responsibilities include architecting modular, reusable validation platforms that can be tested off-vehicle; owning the autonomy integration on development fleets including electrical systems, mounting, power distribution, and fault handling; establishing repeatable build instructions, calibration procedures, and production scripts for vehicle commissioning; and serving as the engineering backstop when field issues cannot be resolved in deployment.
This is a player-coach role: you will lead senior engineers and technicians while remaining hands-on with technical decisions. You'll work cross-functionally with robotics teams on release interfaces, vehicle operations on fleet availability, hardware engineering on manufacturing execution, and OEM/supplier partners.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or related field, with 10+ years of relevant experience including 5+ years leading engineers (equivalent hands-on experience considered). You must have deep ownership of vehicle integration from architecture through fleet deployment, with hands-on expertise in vehicle networks (CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet), drive-by-wire and actuation, electrical/harness architecture, embedded compute and sensor integration, and hardware-in-the-loop validation. Experience on L3/L4 autonomous driving programs or L2+ production ADAS programs is required. You must be able to work onsite five days per week in San Francisco with travel to test and deployment sites, lift up to 50 lbs, work at height and under vehicles, and maintain a valid driver's license with clean driving record.
