Relay is a digital banking platform designed to help self-made business owners gain clarity and control over their finances. The company is expanding its Design Engineering function—a small, deliberate team responsible for owning the front-end across the product, maintaining a high bar of quality, and building the design systems that power the platform.
In this Senior Design Engineer role, you will have real ownership across the product and work on the most challenging aspects of interface design and implementation. You'll partner closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to ensure shipped experiences meet high standards for quality, usability, and polish.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting a high bar of quality across the product by owning the front-end, systematically reducing UI/UX debt, and improving implementation patterns.
- Embedding within product teams to lead UI implementation for new features from concept through launch.
- Owning and evolving Telegraph, Relay's design system, including component APIs, composition patterns, interaction standards, and documentation.
- Championing accessibility and performance as core product requirements through semantic implementation, keyboard support, focus management, and performance optimization.
- Partnering closely with designers throughout product development, working collaboratively in code and design tooling to iterate on concepts and reduce the gap between design and implementation.
- Creating leverage for the broader organization by translating intent into scalable implementation: reusable components, guidelines, and documentation.
- Building infrastructure and workflows that support AI-accelerated product development, including automating QA/code review, connecting design and engineering tools, and setting up prototyping templates.
This is a formative moment for the Design Engineering function at Relay. You'll have an outsized opportunity to shape how it grows, integrates across product teams, and influences how Relay builds product going forward.
Requirements:
- Strong proficiency in React, JavaScript (TypeScript), HTML, and modern CSS
- Experience working in a real engineering environment with Git, PRs, code review, and shared codebases
- Ability to identify what's right or wrong with a design or component, articulate specific reasons, and propose improvements
- Strong opinions about craft with a high personal bar; portfolio or GitHub demonstrating attention to detail
- Prioritization of speed, reusability, accessibility, cross-browser support, and functional motion as core concerns
- Genuine curiosity about AI tooling and grounded understanding of how these tools work
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience with motion or animation work (motion/react, GSAP, or vanilla CSS animations)
- Ownership of or meaningful contributions to a React component design system (components in code, not just Figma libraries)
